The department Epidemiology of infectious diseases of Sciensano coordinates the national surveillance of infectious diseases from 1983 onwards by a network of microbiological laboratories, further called sentinel laboratories. Those laboratories are distributed evenly in Belgium and they notify and transfer voluntarily
